Case Study #6:

Workers Compensation Claims Department of a Group of Regional Hospitals

The workers compensation department of a 4,500 employee regional hospital group, with four facilities, was charged with the management of up to 1,000 employee injuries per year.  Their initial need called for a system to manage the assignment of tasks, monitoring medical treatment and generate management reports.  They were able to engage their internal IT department who developed a client-server database application to address what they thought was the department’s process needs.

After 6 months of development, the application delivered was cumbersome and not intuitive to the user.  In addition, there were two major limitations.  It did not merge the claim and financial information from the TPA and insurance carrier.  Secondly the system still required a separate application to complete the hospital’s OSHA logs.   The department abandoned the use of the system and continued to use an older spreadsheet for task management and reporting purposes.

Our consultants designed a custom client management database that merged the clients existing claims management data with the information from the TPA’s claims systems.  The application maintained the client’s OSHA logs and reduced the generation of management reports from hours to literally seconds.  The solution annually saves the client hundreds of man hours per year in maintaining and manipulating data.
