Case Study #7:

Risk Management Department of a National Beverage Company

A nationally recognized soft drink manufacturer had insurance policy information going back as far as 1950 in a spreadsheet.  This information was compiled with the use of an outside consultant who was able to perform forensic research to identify and obtain various copies of the insurance policies for the company and many of the entities that had been bought or sold through the previous 50 years.

The client was notified several times a year of environmental claims resulting from locations or entities that the company owned or controlled from decades in the past.  The client needed a means of identifying the entity, policy and the insurance carrier that had coverage during the periods of the pollution exposure in order to put the carrier on notice.

We developed a client server database able to house the client’s policy information, including the heritage company, insurance carrier, limits, contact information, coverage endorsements and exclusions.   When the client was notified of an incident, the details were loaded into the application for tracking purposes.  The database would then identify all policies in effect at the time and generate carrier notification letters.  The company’s Risk Manager estimated that this database will help them identify up to $10 million of additional limits from these historic policies that might have had to be paid by the company itself.
